This week Pastor Michael Todd shared an incredible sermon with us. As we continued our Summer of a Lifetime series, he brought an encouraging, entertaining, and challenging word to us!
12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
Here’s what he told us to do if we truly have the light of the world inside of us:
- Turn It On
- Leave It On
So, with that in mind, let me ask you guys one more question: Where are you going? Light leads us in the dark. When we have the light of Jesus Christ, he’s going to lead us somewhere. We all have some light leading the way, but what kind of light is it? Look at this Proverb:
12 There is a path before each person that seems right,
but it ends in death.
That tells me we have a choice to make. We can be led by Jesus and go in the right direction. Or we can be led in the way that seems right, but ends up in the wrong direction and ultimately a dead end.
The choice is ours. We can be led by the light of the world or we can be lead into darkness by the world. Pastor Michael said there are three things we need to do to make sure we’re making the right choice:
- Love the Lord our God,
- Obey him, and
- Commit ourselves firmly to him.
What happens when we make this choice? The light of the world becomes our light!
20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Here’s the thing - Where you’re going is determined by who you are. And who you are is determined by who is living inside of you. We each have the choice to live our own lives. How are you going to live yours?
I have to live my life as who I really am, who God made me. Am I Alex Himaya or am I someone else? Are you who you are, or are you someone else? You can be you, or you can be another person with another name – someone I call Luke Warm. He’s the type of Christian that makes a decision, then goes back on it. He keeps saying he’s going to love God and serve him and let his light shine. But then he rests on his last decision and his inner light fades. He doesn’t live in instant obedience.
What’s really interesting is as you read the Gospels, you see these two things about the light of the world. Look at these two verses:
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”
Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.”
So, which is it? It’s both!
As we love God, obey him instantly, and commit ourselves to him, just like Paul said in Galatians, we become more like Jesus. We move from Luke Warm to who we really are and who we are meant to be – like Jesus. It’s not something we can do on our own, as if we can muster up enough self-control or force of will, make enough right choices and decisions that one day God says, “Now you’re as holy as Jesus.” It’s about an inner transformation – God making us more like Jesus every day.
That’s where we’re going – on a journey getting closer and closer to Jesus. Who wants to come with me?
